New app Intercourse helping startups prepare a winning pitch

It could be a ‘make or break’ moment for any entrepreneur – standing before a critical audience, armed with a PowerPoint presentation, taking a deep breath before launching into reasons why their idea is the next big thing.

Unfortunately, in the startup world, being armed with a great idea is simply not enough, and many entrepreneurs end up facing rejection due to an inadequate pitch.

New mobile app Intercourse aims to prevent ideas from meeting their untimely demise, by allowing budding entrepreneurs to draw from the wisdom of the masses before delivering the pitch that counts.

Launched today on the Apple App Store, Intercourse allows users to record videos of their pitches and presentations, while giving a short URL for people in the audience to visit. The audience can then provide real-time feedback by clicking ‘Like!’ or ‘Meh’ throughout the pitch, with the option of providing additional comments. The audience’s feedback is shown on top of the video, and is saved for later playback.

Intercourse was co-founded by Murray Hurps and Ronald Suwandi, who spent three weeks building the app in-house at Sydney’s Fishburners. Hurps says that while entrepreneurs do spend a lot of time trying to improve their pitches, they usually resort to methods like the old-fashioned note-taking, or being interrupted during a pitching session.

Intercourse, on the other hand, makes the process more seamless. Everyone in the audience can play their part and provide honest, anonymous feedback through mere taps on their iPhones or iPads.

The response to the app has been overwhelmingly positive. Hurps says, “everyone I’ve spoken to has shown enthusiasm towards the concept. It’s a great way for people to receive market validation without leaving the room.”

Another great thing about Intercourse is that it can be used during live events – such as Hackathons, pitch competitions, panel discussions or in any other context where a person is delivering a presentation to an audience.

At the moment, however, Intercourse is being targeted to the Australian startup community.

“Australians are doing amazing things in the startup space; and the reason we, as a community, are succeeding in our endeavours is because we think and operate differently. Hopefully if people enjoy our app, we can improve the pitching process, and boost people’s confidence at the same time,” says Hurps.

Down the track, Hurps plans on introducing video-sharing functionality within the app.
